Orthodontics

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry. It deals with problems that can arise in the development of the teeth and jaws. Such problems are not uncommon. Some of the problems can be obvious to all - crooked teeth, missing teeth, protruding teeth. Other problems might at first be obvious only to your dentist. Many of these problems require orthodontic treatment to correct the position of the teeth, not only to improve their appearance, but also to ensure the health of the teeth and gums.

Orthodontic Treatment

This is seldom simple or quick. The usual outcome is considerable improvement of the position of the teeth rather than perfection. A good result is unlikely without the enthusiastic co-operation of the patient in carrying out the orthodontist's instructions. The length of time active treatment takes, varies, but is often about eighteen months, with appointments every 6 - 8 weeks apart. It is often necessary to extract permanent teeth as part of the treatment to provide space for the movement of the other teeth.

Orthodontic Appliances

More commonly known as "braces", there are now many types of orthodontic appliances, which are worn in the mouth to move the teeth. Some can be removed from the mouth, but others are fixed to the teeth. The type needed varies with the individual case. Most have to be worn all the time, day and night, all of them, to varying degrees, can be seen in the mouth.

Cosmetic Appliances

Cosmetic appliances are clear or white brackets attached to the teeth instead of the metal brackets provided on the NHS, making them less noticeable. Unfortunately, cosmetic appliances are not available on the NHS. If you would like details on cosmetic treatment please ask at the practice.

Most people think that orthodontic treatment can only be beneficial to patients who are still growing. The average age of most of our patients is between 11-16. But you may be surprised to learn that many of our patients wearing orthodontic appliances are adults. Providing your teeth are still present, it is never too late to improve your smile!
